Traffic Engineering Associates, Inc.
was founded in 1994 by Ivan Bartha, PE, when Ivan retired after a long career as a traffic engineer with the Michigan Department of Transportation. He opened the business out of his home in Haslett, Michigan, with his wife Josephine as his first employee. Shortly after establishing the company, he brought on Jerry Spagnolly, PE, a retired traffic engineer from the City of Lansing, as a part-time engineer to assist Ivan on projects. Together, this small team acquired clients across the state of Michigan and established the foundation for a successful future.
In 2003, Heather Zull, PE, was hired as the first full-time traffic engineer, which was a further continuation of her career in private consulting. Heather conducted traffic engineering studies as well as assisted in the business administration and marketing for the company. In 2006, the company again expanded with the addition of David Sonnenberg, PE. David retired as the Director of Traffic & Safety from the Ingham County Road Commission and joined TEA. His primary responsibilities were project management and marketing.
As time passed, Ivan decided he was enjoying time with his family, friends and winters away in Florida, and decided to retire a second time. He passed more corporate responsibility to Heather and David, which helped smooth the transition of ownership. In January of 2008, Heather and David purchased TEA from Ivan and are continuing TEA’s dedication to quality engineering that Ivan had prided himself on since 1994.
